Myself and 20 other friends on a daytrip to Lisdoonvarna called in here for drinks and music. However one of our party needed to take medicine and asked for water. She was offered sparking water which she cannot take with her medicine so asked for tap water and was refused. One of our party had small amount of water in bottle. As our friend started to take her medicine the bar man and barwoman started shouting abuse at us telling us we couldn’t drink water here. We left. Irish hospitality is not in Rathbaun Hotel.!! I recently went to the Rathbaun even though I said I would never go back again. I was with some friends who persuaded me to go and what a difference a year makes. Kicking off, we were very lucky with our accommodation, booking an AirBnB rental that had only recently become free due to a last-minute cancellation. The property owners Melanie and John take great delight in our Lisdoonvarna excitement and kindly offer us a lift into the town that night.
We all agree that this story is a definite good omen for a night of romance that is sure to follow To kick the evening off we head to The Matchmakers Bar, the infamous Lisdoonvarna location where we hear matchmaker Willie Daly is to be found. The place is absolutely heaving with people, the majority of whom are middle-aged men. As we wait in the queue we watch Willie in action; he is warm and friendly and knows how to make people feel at ease. Willie Daly is a third generation matchmaker and is pretty much the king of this entire festival.
What does Willie do, exactly? They have travelled all the way from Utah to meet Willie, and their eyes shine brightly with a mixture of hope and nerves. Ho ho ho, we know your game, Willie!

I am hoping to go to the Matchmaking festival for four nights mid-week and am trying to decide on a hotel. Sheedy’s , which is ranked no. Which of the other hotels would be best? Went down to Lisdoonvarna for the weekend on the 2nd-5th oct it was the second Outing festival in the Hydro hotel. Like last year it was an amazing weekend it is getting better each year so will be booking again for next year. I brought a few friends down and was worried that they wouldn’t enjoy it but all of them had a great time. Years ago, I saw a movie about a matchmaking festival in Ireland, which led me to book a trip to Lisdoonvarna in September. I wasn’t sure where to go so I reached out to Julie, Media person for the festival and she directed me to the Hydro Hotel. I’m so glad she did. I was there for six nights. Breakfast was included with my room and it was pretty tasty. Staff gladly modified breakfast to suit my needs. Room was clean – basic standard room, no fridge but there is a tv with limited channels.
By the end of my stay, I definitely felt like “family”.
